341 Roads to be developed

The development of 341 roads in 341 Municipal Councils, Urban Councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas will commence on 29 November under the patronage of the Minister of Highways, Johnston Fernando.
State Minister for Rural Roads and Other Infrastructure, Nimal Lanza, said it is planned to implement this in line with the national programme to develop 100,000 kilometres (km) of roadways.
He said so while participating in a discussion held at the Ministry Auditorium yesterday (23) on the future course of action of the national programme.
He instructed the officials of the Ministry to select a suitable road identified by the institutions, to develop it, and to make arrangements to hand it over.
The road projects should be completed expeditiously to achieve the target of developing 100,000 km of roads within the next four years. The necessary mechanism should be set up properly for that. Lanza also instructed the officials to initiate a programme to construct car parks in the suburbs from next year, to develop roads, as well as reduce traffic congestion.
