3 Sri Lankans named in Italy’s squad
3 Sri Lankans - Madupa Fernando, Dinidu Marage and Joy Perera – have been named in Italy’s squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier next month. Dinidu Asanka Marage: Born 24 September 1981 in Colombo. A right-handed leg spinning all-rounder, he played in the domestic premier league competitions for Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club, Chilaw Marians Cricket Club and Panadura Sports Club early in his career.
After migrating to Italy, he made his debut for the Italian national side in April 2013, at the World Cricket League Division Three tournament. He has represented Italy’s national team in six T20 matches so far. Bentota Baduge Joy Lenin Perera: Born 1 May 1987 in Sri Lanka. A right-handed middleorder batter, Perera debuted for Italy at the 2010 European Championship in Jersey. He has represented Italy’s national team in 16 T20 matches so far.
Madupa Fernando: Born 13 July 1991 in Sri Lanka. The left-hander has represented Italy’s national team in 16 T20 matches since 2017. Jade Dernbach, the 35-yearold seamer who won 58 limited overs caps for England between 2011 and 2014, has also been named in Italy›s squad. He will resume his international career after being persuaded to play for Italy. Italy reached October›s qualifier - which forms part of the pathway for the 2022 T20 World Cup - by virtue of their T20I ranking, after the subqualifier events were cancelled by the ICC due to COVID-19.
They will face Jersey, Germany and Denmark from 15-21 October in Spain, with the top two teams progressing to the global qualifiers in early 2022.
