Sports 2nd Sri Lanka Women’s Chess Grand Prix 2021: 14-year-old Dahamdi emerges champ

WCM K.M. Dahamdi Sanudula, the 14- year-old from Musaeus College, won the 2nd Sri Lanka Women’s Chess Grand Prix 2021 convincingly at the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka headquarters on the 21st (Sunday).

She led the event from start to finish and scored 9 points out of a possible 11 games. She came back strongly in the penultimate round to win the crucial game against the Silver medalist Niklesha Tharusi. Having 1 point lead she drew her final round match against Esha Pallie to finish the event. 

She had one loss (Sandeepani Tharushi), two draws (Dasuni Mendis, Esha Pallie), and won all her other games. 

Sanudula received the Championship Trophy, Gold Medal and Rs. 30,000 in cash.

Niklesha Tharushi of Visakha Vidyalaya also had a good event and was at Sanudula heels from the start, but losing to her in the penultimate round did the damage. She won the Silver Medal and Rs. 20,000 in cash.

Pasindi Yathra Wijesuriya and Dasuni Mendis (both from Visakha Vidyalaya) tied for third place with 7 points each. However, Pasindi was awarded the Bronze medal on better tie breaker. 

Pasindi had a good day, scoring two wins against Oshini Gunawardena and Gaveshi Wickramarathne in 10th and 11th rounds. 

Dasuni beat Gimashi Weerathunga in the 10th round,but surprisingly lost to Jayandi Bimansa(a lesser rated player) in the last round which cost her third place.

Pasindi and Dasuni shared the 3rd and 4th place cash awards of Rs 16,000, Fifth place went to another Visakhian Esha Pallie.
