21/4 PCoI appointed by Previous Govt: Present Govt not responsible – Lanza
State Minister Nimal Lanza said the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) into the 2019 Easter Sunday Attacks was appointed by the former ‘Good Governnace’ Government and therefore they (the current Government) cannot take responsibility for it.
Lanza expressed these views while inaugurating the Deiyandara road development project in Matara recently.
He said, “The Easter Sunday attack took place during the period of Good Governance. Therefore, their responsibility cannot be delegated to anyone else. Security was reduced to zero due to arrests of intelligence officers and political retaliation. That is why the Easter attack took place.
As someone who represents the Catholic community, we express our regret if any Sinhala Buddhist organisation in this country is offended by the report of the PCoI. Also, it should be noted that neither we nor the Catholic Church, which represents the Catholic people, asked to look into Sinhala Buddhist organisations at any time.”
Lanza said the terror attack was not carried out by the Buddhist people in this country. “The attack was carried out by terrorists. Who helped those terrorists? Who sponsored them? Those were the questions we hoped that the PCoI would find. But answers are not in the PCoI report. Therefore, we have to say that we are disappointed with the report of this commission,” he stressed.
