Over 2,500 additional Police Officers have been deployed to areas prone to post-election violence, following a request by the Election Commission, Police Media Spokesman, SSP Jaliya Senaratne said.
Addressing a Media briefing yesterday (6), he said certain areas were recognised as prone to violence based on information provided by State Intelligence Services.
Armed mobile patrols and roadblocks will be in place until the end of the General Election in order to prevent any violence, he added.
Senaratne noted that this election can be identified as a peaceful one with only a total of 350 election law violations being reported, until 6:00 a.m. yesterday, including 177 violations identified by the Police and 173 public complaints, while there was only a total of 116 other offences reported.
The most violations, 55 cases in total, were reported in the Embilipitiya Police Division followed by 36 in the Kantale Police Division and 25 in the Ampara Police Division, he added, noting also that the most of the other election related offences were reported from Ampara.
