The Department of Wildlife Conservation stated that from the initial post-mortem carried out on the marine species that were washed ashore following the MV X-Press Pearl vessel fire, it appears that the cause of death is due to the seepage of chemicals into the ocean resulting from the ship fire. Further, it was stated that according to the initial postmortem, the deaths of marine species were not natural deaths, and evidence of breathing difficulties prior to death is apparent.

Minister of Wildlife and Forest Conservation, C.B. Ratnayake said that further investigations into the death of marine species is being carried out while the Department of Wildlife Conservation added that following investigations carried out by the Government Analyst, the final report will be produced in Court soon.

Ministry Spokesperson, Nimal Yatiwela said that a total of 97 turtle deaths, 17 dolphin deaths and four whale deaths have been reported adding that certain external burns on these species has made it evident that it was not death by a natural cause and that a thorough investigation has to be carried out to determine the exact cause
