Train services within the Western Province are scheduled to resume on Monday (25), according to Minister of Transport Pavithra Wanniarachchi. She noted, however, that only passengers with season tickets will be permitted to commute in trains. Meanwhile, interprovincial trains are due to resume operations on 1 November.

The Railways Department plans to operate 50 trains on the main line, six trains on the Northern line, 64 on the coastal line, eight on the Kelani Valley line and 18 on the Puttalam line. Commuters have been requested to adhere to the health and safety guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health.

Earlier, island-wide train services were scheduled to resume on 15 October. This decision was later changed, however, owing to concerns that many train commuters often travel standing, due to the lack of seats in compartments. It was announced on Friday (22) that the prevailing interprovincial travel restrictions are to be lifted at 4:00 a.m. on 31 October.
