News With upcoming energy projects: State Minister Confi dent 70% Renewable Goal Attainable

State Minister of Solar Power, Wind and Hydro Power Generation Projects Development Duminda Dissanayake said that largescale and small-scale renewable energy projects of more than 50 megawatts will significantly boost the renewable energy objective of 70 per cent. He said this during a recent visit to the 3.3 MW biomass power plant in Diyaviddagama, Dehiattakandiya and the 1 MW Solar Power Plant in Kahambana, Moneragala, noting that the biomass power plant contributes 24 gigawatts of power to the national grid yearly.

The Minister also stated that by 2030, renewable energy projects such as tidal power generation, large scale hydro power plants, terrestrial solar power plants, wind power plants, terraced solar power systems, floating solar power plants, small scale hydro power plants, geothermal power plants, and biomass power plants will meet 70 per cent of the national electricity requirement.

“Such domestic and foreign investments are critical to achieving the 70 per cent renewable target, and the Government has already provided the entire necessary infrastructure for renewable energy investors”. “The Cabinet has approved the start of new initiatives for renewable energy projects with private sector participation. New investors must comply with the Renewable Energy Authority Act No. 35 of 2007.
