A top official of the Prison Department claimed the rights group established to speak on behalf of prisoners is provoking inmates at Welikada Prison to meet their own needs. The official stated that they have never treated the prisoners unfairly simply because they stage protests and that prison officials are unable to accommodate their demands because the inmates are penalised based on a Court ruling.

A tense situation arose at Welikada Prison as a result of a protest by a group of convicts but was brought under control. Prison officials managed to handle the situation when a group of inmates serving long sentences protested on the roof, behaving riotously and harassing other inmates. They requested a reduced sentence or a general pardon. Prison officials stated that they had discussed the situation with the protesting detainees, but they refused to leave the roof. As a result, the authorities took action to get the situation under control. Several detainees who had acted in an unruly manner were sent to a cell, while several others still remain on the prison’s roof.
