Sports facilities in Batticaloa District upgraded

Backward Rural Areas Development and Promotion of Domestic Animal Husbandry and Minor Economic Crop Cultivation State Minister Sathasivam Viyalanderan, said yesterday (27) all possible steps have been taken to improve the skills of young sportsmen/women in the rural villages in the Batticaloa District with the intention of transforming them to be athletes of international standard capable of bringing honour to the motherland.
He said that the Vantharumoolai Diamond Stadium, Meerakerney Stadium and Koddaikallar Stadium in the Batticaloa District, renovated under the first phase of rural playground development project of the Government, were commissioned to the youth during the recent visit of Youth and Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa to the District.
Viyalanderan went on to say that he has asked the Minister to set up a Youth Centre in the Batticaloa District for the exclusive use of the youth in the District, and expressed confidence that in the event such a centre was set up, the young men and women in the District will get an opportunity to improve their skills by making use of the available modern technology, while also making use of the facility for educational purposes.
Minister further stated that the proposed centre would also be able to produce skilled workers suitable for the international labour market. Viyalanderan added that the Sports Minister brought to his attention that he was committed to develop the sports sector in the Batticaloa District, and intended to uplift beach volleyball, especially as the sport can be popularized on the beaches in the region.
Viyalanderan said the Minister was eagerly waiting to see athletes from the Batticaloa District participating in international sports events. He further stated that the stadiums commissioned by Minister Rajapaksa will be further upgraded with modern facilities, and steps will be taken in the near future to provide sports equipment and coaches to schools in the District.
