Local Substandard Chinese fertilizer will not be accepted: Aluthgamage

The ship carrying a consignment of substandard Chinese organic fertilizer will not be allowed into Sri Lanka, Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said today (27).

Speaking at a media briefing, Aluthgamagage noted that no testing of samples will take place on this consignment, and that they are not willing to pay the Chinese firm in question unless the required standards are met.

"We will not make the payment for this shipment unless they go back and manufacture fertilizer that meets our standards and specifications. If this is done, we will make the payment and accept the fertilizer only if this is done", he said in this regard.

Speaking on the matter yesterday , Co-Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana emphasized that the Government is not ready to accept substandard Chinese organic fertilizer.

The Minister added that the ship carrying the organic fertilizer consignment in question has been prevented from entering the Colombo Port, on the instructions of the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority Nihal Keppetipola.
