Cabinet has approved the appointing of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa's Coordinating Secretary, Geethanath Kassilingam as the Government's special Rehabilitation Facilitation Officer for the North and East.
He will work to strengthen the rehabilitation programmes in the two provinces and highlight issues related to war affected people and solve them with the Government’s intervention.
Kassilingam told Ceylon Today that his appointment would focus on issues faced by the people in the North and East, who have been severely impacted by decades of war. Issues include youth unemployment, livelihood issues, land and housing issues, and hardships faced by female-headed households. He said before extending help, there is a need to collect statistics by way of a detailed census on those who were displaced during the conflict. Furthermore, these grievances will be addressed and also communicated to the President and Prime Minister from time to time and the relevant Ministers. They will be briefed and action will be taken based on their advice, he said.
