Plastic pollution in the seas off Weligama, Matara, dissuaded the Dutch Envoy’s family from surfing.

Ambassador Tanja Gonggrijp, speaking at a function in Colombo recently said, “Three weeks ago I went to Weligama with the family. My boys wanted to go surfing, but we never did. It was not the rain stopping us, but the issue might have been caused by the heavy rains. We went into the water knee deep and our legs were wrapped in pieces of plastic. I had never encountered it before.”

She said so at the inauguration of the Central Environmental Authority’s (CEA’s) 40th Anniversary Celebrations held at the BMICH on 24 November, the Dutch Embassy in Sri Lanka stated on its website on Thursday (2 December).
