Payment for fertiliser story: CID grills Aruna Editor, Journo
The CID summoned Editor of the ‘Aruna’ newspaper, Mahinda Ileperuma yesterday (24) and questioned him for over four and a half hours regarding the leading news item published in the Sunday paper, under the heading ‘Rs 290 million to a private account to pay for Indian fertiliser’. Ileperuma had been questioned by the CID regarding this news item on a request to Inspector General of Police, C.D. Wickremaratne, made by Secretary to the President Dr. P.B. Jayasundera.
It is reported that the Editor had been questioned on the sources related to this news item and in connection with a statement made by the Chairman of the People’s Bank. In addition, the writer of this news article, journalist Udayajeewa Ekanayake, had also been questioned for about two hours by the CID. It is reported further that the ‘Aruna’ Editor had told the CID the relevant news article had been prepared based on a statement made by JVP Member of Parliament Vijitha Herath in Parliament, as a source and that he accepts all responsibility regarding the news item.
