No reduction of ban for cricketers yet
Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Mendis and Danushka Gunathilaka, who are serving a ban, will not feature in the Sri Lanka Cricket major league domestic tournament starting in October, a top SLC official confirmed.
Replying to a query by Ceylon Today he said their ban of six months for domestic cricket will only end in January; hence, they will not be able to play the upcoming domestic league though there were several news stories that were shared, especially on social media, about their participation for the said league.
The trio was banned for one year from international cricket and six months from domestic cricket on disciplinary grounds for breaching the bio secure bubble during their tour to the UK last June. A video circulated on social media led to a public outcry, especially since the team wasn’t doing well in the UK, which forced the authorities to take stern action against them.
Initially the committee suggested a two-year ban, but the SLC executive committee later altered that. They have already requested a reduced ban from SLC which so far has not received a favorable reply, though they may get relief to play in the Lanka Premier League in December. (AK)
