The Mullaithivu Chief Magistrate’s Court has imposed an injunction against the illegal assembly of people and lighting of lamps in the Mullivaikkal area of Mullaithivu. This injunction had been issued by the Court on a request made by Mullaithivu Police, connected to the COVId-19 health guidelines put in place to curb the spread of the virus.
Police said its intelligence unit had received information that large groups of people were planning to gather in the Mullivaikkal area on 18 May with the intention of lighting lamps to commemorate those who had died during the war. According to the Police, the proposed actions of those who intend to stage such events would be a hindrance to their efforts to control the spread of the third wave of the pandemic in the area and hence they had sought the injunction from Court. Mullaithivu Police warned that any person found guilty of flouting the health guidelines and the Court injunction would be arrested and prosecuted. They added that the injunction would be in effect till 20 May and all events and celebrations had been outlawed.
