Local Marriage procedure in MMDA to be amended

The Cabinet has approved amendments to the Code of Civil Procedure and the Marriage Procedure contained in the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act (MMDA).

The proposal was tabled by the Ministry of Justice after taking into account claims made by several women's organizations and law scholars belonging to the Muslim community that certain provisions of the MMDA are discriminatory, despite Article 12 of the Constitution stating that no citizen shall be subject to discrimination on the basis of race, religion, language, caste, sex, place of birth, political opinion, or any other reason.

Thus, the need to repeal such provisions from the law has been raised, and it has been decided to amend the MMDA accordingly.
