Local Litro discontinued tests, Govt responsible for explosions - Sajith

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has accused Litro Gas Lanka of discontinuing the relevant tests carried out to detect any gas leaks.

Speaking at the opening of a Dhamma School at Meegahajandura Rajamaha Vihara, Premadasa accused Litro Gas Lanka of discontinuing their checks and tests, in a bid to meet the high demand for LP gas cylinders.

Owing to the ongoing foreign reserve crisis, Litro Gas was unable to meet the demand for LP gas cylinders during 28 October and 12 November, Premadasa explained, adding that a shipment of LP gas was due to arrive within this time period.

Thus, in an attempt to meet the high levels of demand, the state-owned company stopped all tests for gas leaks, and released substandard gas cylinders to the local market, he alleged.

Moreover, he noted that this was the "root cause" of the recent surge of gas-related explosions being reported across the country, as Litro Gas Lanka is responsible for 72% of LP gas being distributed within the local market, amounting to nearly 85,000 cylinders on a daily basis.

Thus, he emphasised that the Government too should be held responsible for these explosions, as Litro Gas Lanka is being operated under Sri Lanka Insurance, which is under the purview of the Treasury and the Ministry of Finance.

Premadasa called for an independent investigation into the matter, and that all those responsible be bought before the law.
