Litro Gas admitted that it had made some changes to the composition of the domestic LP gas. However, when probed during a media briefing held yesterday (1), Litro Gas also maintained that they are not in a position to confirm the specific composition of domestic gas currently available in the market.

What exactly is the composition of gas in the cylinders in the market now?

A: No one can say for sure as it varies from consignment to consignment. Litro also said the test report of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation on the composition of gas was different from the test report of its own company. They also said it had requested for an independent country to conduct tests and obtain reports, as there is no suitable laboratory facility in Sri Lanka to test it. Factory Manager of Litro, I. Wijeratne said the gas composition was changed when the 18-litre cylinders were introduced to the market.

However, he said the production of 18-litre gas cylinders was completely halted after 28 July 2021. Litro claimed to have released between 60,000-70,000 cylinders when it was introduced. "When it hit the market in April, the first batch was released with the 50:50 format compositions." Litro also said it did not change the odour of the gas in domestic LP cylinders. Last July, a change in the composition of gas cylinders was made and several sample cylinders were released to the market, Wijeratne told a TV Channel on Tuesday (30), when he appeared on a talk show.

In the interview, he said there was a significant change in the existing standard composition. He also said the cylinders were removed from the market, as the experiment was not successful. He added that at present, the composition of gas in the cylinders available in the market is in line with existing standards.
