The death toll from the ferry capsize in Kinniya, Trincomalee has risen to eight, according to hospital sources.

A woman, aged 41 years, succumbed to her injuries yesterday (04) at Kinniya Hospital.

An elderly man, a woman, her two small children and two sisters died on the spot following the capsize at the Kurinchankerny lagoon on 23 November.

Five days later, a six-year-old child receiving treatment at the Trincomalee Hospital died.

The owner and two operators of the ill-fated ferry and the chairman of the Kinniya urban council, who gave approval for the ferry service, are in remand custody in connection with the incident.

The Navy has since deployed a lagoon craft to transport passengers in the lagoon until the construction of the Kurinchankerny Bridge is completed.
