Johnston moves to ease Galle’s traffic congestion

Highways Minister Johnston Fernando on Friday (24) directed his Ministry officials to accelerate road works and the construction of two proposed bridges to alleviate traffic congestion in Galle and its suburbs, a Ministry statement said. Fernando further said that the two bridges and widening of eight roads have been identified as solutions to the traffic congestion in Galle and its suburbs.
The proposals include building two new bridges over Ittepana and Madu Rivers, developing the road connecting to the Colombo-Galle Expressway and expand Galle Beach Road into a four lane road, build a new road to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital from the Pinnaduwa interchange of the Southern Expressway, extend the Galle-Baddegama Road to Hirimbura, widening of Main Street in Galle Town, developing the Galle-Wakwella Road into a four lane road, developing and widening Richmond Hill Road up to Karapitiya, developing the road stretch from Hirimbura Junction to Karapitiya Hospital and a new road in parallel to the road from Pinnaduwa to Galle Road. The Minister said that new sign boards, traffic lights and roundabouts have been planned in these areas to lessen traffic congestion.
