The Government will not go back on its decision to reject the cargo of bulk organic fertiliser, which is currently on the vessel sent by Quingdao Seawin Biotech Group Company Ltd. Co-Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said even though the ship is in Colombo’s outer harbour, it has not been granted permission to anchor and will never be allowed to anchor in Sri Lankan waters.

Speaking at the weekly Cabinet press briefing yesterday (26), he noted that Chairman of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), Capt. Nihal Keppetipola, has already been asked to take all efforts to prevent the vessel from entering Sri Lanka.

When asked why the Chinese Embassy insists on the Government of Sri Lanka accepting bulk organic fertiliser, Dr. Pathirana claimed that fertiliser containing carcinogens will never be accepted, and the Government will never hesitate to reject harmful content entering the country.

According to Quingdao Sea win, the cargo was sent to Sri Lanka on 23 October, but the SLPA stated that the ship is not at the Colombo port. In a letter, the Chinese company encouraged local officials to subject the fertilisers to another round of sample testing in the presence of both local and Chinese fertiliser experts in order to clarify whether the organic fertiliser is contaminated.
