Amidst reports of Indian business tycoon Gautam Adani visiting Sri Lanka and having met President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the Government yesterday claimed it had no knowledge about the details of his visit, other than acknowledging his arrival in the country.

When a journalist queried about the authenticity of reports on Adani’s visit, Co-Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said even though it is only classified as a ‘private visit’, the latter would most probably inspect the investments he has already undertaken in the country.

“We have been informed that during his visit, he will inquire about investment prospects in Sri Lanka. They have already declared their desire to construct the WCT, as you are aware. He may have visited Sri Lanka to investigate investment prospects, but no formal statement has been published as of yet. Bringing such investments to the country for the purpose of growth is a distinct scenario,” he explained.

The group is investing 51 per cent in the West Container Terminal of the Colombo Port. Back in India, thousands of farmers held protests across the country protesting the Adani Group.

Pathirana said it is Government’s responsibility to improve infrastructure and create conducive environment required by investors in order to attract foreign investors to Sri Lanka as a solution to the current dollar shortage. Dr.Pathirana went on to say that foreign investment is important for the country and that they need to attract foreign investment to Sri Lanka as a solution to the dollar shortage.
