Funding received for special video units – Piyal Nishantha

Funds to establish nine video evidence recording units at the provincial level to record testimonies from victims of child abuse has been allocated, State Minister of Women and Child Development, Preschools and Primary Education, School Infrastructure and Education Services, Piyal Nishantha said.
He said that evidence will be recorded from the victims in a manner that will not jeopardise their security, adding that a discussion pertaining to the establishment of the recording units was held on Thursday (22).
He further added that special courts have been created to hear child-abuse cases in Provinces to expedite the legal process and added that District Secretariats have been instructed to compile a report on offences against children from their respective Divisional Secretariat Coordinating Committees every month.
Nishantha also stated that stern actions will be taken in accordance to the Penal Code against those responsible for the death of the 16-year-old girl domestic worker at SJB MP Rishad Bathiudeen’s private residence, irrespective of positions held by the offender, adding that the investigation should also be expedited.
