Scribbler Climate Change: The House of Cards

Have you ever tried to build a house of cards? It looks really nice and makes a great picture. But it takes a lot of time, skill and patience to put together. The sad thing is, although it takes a lot of time for a house of cards to be built, perfectly balanced, you only need to shift one card before it all comes crashing down. The world we live in is a lot like a house of cards. As resilient as we may be, it only took one virus to change the world as we know it.

Of course, humans aren’t the only beings living in the world in perfect balance. The earth, wildlife and nature all exist in perfect balance, but you and I both know that this it slowly changing because of what we are doing to the planet. One of the biggest examples of this is climate change. You might have heard about this already, and might have an idea on what it’s about. You might already know that it’s bad for the earth and can be bad for both you and me. Let’s talk about it a little more.

What is a climate?

Although the weather does have a role in creating a climate, it isn’t the full story. A climate is the overall way the weather is like in a place over a long period of time. For example, Sri Lanka is a country that has a tropical climate, because it’s sunny and humid almost all year-round, and it has been like this for many generations. The word climate change is pretty obviously telling that something has changed in the climate over a period of time. You might think that it’s a fairly new thing, but that’s not true.

It has happened before

Take a second to look outside. What the climate is like. Now, imagine what it would have been like outside if you were in the time of the dinosaurs, or during the last ice-age. If you thought that it would have been very different from what it is today, you’d be right. How the weather changes all year round, how the winds change the direction they are blowing over the year, how hot or cold it gets during the day; these all would have been very different. Climate change is a natural thing, and has been happening on the planet for millions of years. It is not something new. You must be wondering now, ‘why is everyone making such a big fuss about it now then?’

The real problem

The real problem is that right now, the climate is changing a lot faster than it should be. Before, the climate changed gradually, and animals were able to evolve and keep up with the change. But now, the climate that should change over decades is changing in years, meaning that animals are struggling to keep up, and with all that people are doing, we are only making things worse. If this continues to happen, that perfectly balanced house of cards will quickly crash down to the ground, with you and I along with it. That’s why it’s important that although we can’t do a lot right now, we do the small things we can to take care of our planet.

Don’t lose hope

You’ll hear a lot of sad stories about how the climate is changing, and how it is affecting people, even us who live in a tropical country. But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t hope. The first thing that we all can do is to learn more about climate change and how it can be slowed down. Of course, it’s up to you to do it. A lot of people are helping around the world to make it happen. You can be part of it too
