Bachelet’s statements violate UN Charter – SB

The allegations made against Sri Lanka by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet are illegal and are in contravention to the UN Charter, SLPP MP S.B. Dissanayake said.
He said according to Article 2 (7) of the UN Charter, the UN is not permitted to intervene in matters which are essentially within the domestic jurisdiction of any State. He added that the declaration of emergency regulations is a decision made within the domestic jurisdiction and that Bachelet has no legal right to comment on such decision.
He stressed that the Foreign Minister has made it clear that such allegations would be rejected. “Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, MP Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe during the ‘Good Governance’ regime made several efforts to enter into the MCC Agreement, but we managed to get rid of it,” he further said, while adding that the President and Government is working with diligence so as to maintain the relationship with South Asian countries.
