A domestic LP gas cylinder had exploded in a house at College Junction, Hokandara Road, Kottawa, in the wee hours of yesterday. Kottawa Police confirmed that the explosion was caused by a Gas leak at around 4 a.m.

The explosion has severely destroyed the house, but no casualties were reported.

Several explosions have been reported in the last month at restaurants in Weligama and Colombo 7, as well as a bakery in Ratnapura.

Prior to yesterday’s blast, the most recent explosion was reported on 20 November at an international franchise restaurant, on the ground level of the Race Course building on Reid Avenue in Colombo. Meanwhile, Government Analyst Gauri Ramana, refuted claims that the occurrences were caused by a change in the propane to butane ratio in domestic cylinders. According to the analyst, the main cause of the explosions was discovered to be gas leaks.
