Action Plan to Rejuvenate Fisheries Industry, Marine Life – State Minister

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources is to prepare an action plan to rebuild the fisheries industry affected by the fire that broke out on the MV X-Press Pearl vessel, State Minister Kanchana Wijesekara said.
He added that the assessment of damages and the course of action to rebuild the marine environment and resources and the fisheries industry will be prepared by a committee of officials and scientists from the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, The National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA), National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA) together with other experts in the field.
Furthermore, the initial meeting of the committee appointed to investigate into the loss and damage caused to the marine environment and the fisheries industries as a result of the MV X-Press vessel fire took place under the patronage of Wijesekara on 8 Tuesday.
The main duties vested in this committee is to assess the current and future impact of the fire on the marine environment and the fisheries industries and to produce findings for Court proceedings while the estimates will be used to claim compensation.
