Liyanapathirana and Newansa champs

 Pasan Vindula Liyanapathirana of Anandians Chess Club and M. Esandi Newansa of Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda won the Sri Lanka National Rapid Championship organised by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka and held last week at Sharasthrananda Nawodya Maha Vidyalaya, Dehiwala.

 The tournament was played under the standard control of 15 min plus 10-sec increment from move 01.

 In the open event, 305 players competed for nine rounds. Liyanapathirana was unbeaten throughout the event and only one game was drawn against Pesandu Rashmitha Liyanage in the eighth round. Two players tied for 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Pasindu Nimsara Dharmakeerthi and FM Isuru Alahakoon scored 8 points respectively, and with the better tie break Pasindu (Richmond College) became the first runner-up and Isuru (Sri Lanka Navy Chess Club) had to be content with 3rd place.

 In the women’s event, 127 players competed for seven rounds. Newansa was unbeaten throughout the event and only one game was drawn against Presansa Premanath in the fourth round. Five players were tied for the 2nd and 3rd places respectively. WCM K.M. Dahamdi Sanudula, Devindya Oshini Gunawardhana, WFM Dasuni Mendis, WCM Ehsha Mishela Pallie and Dehansa Nisanduni Sandanayake scored 6 points respectively, and with a better tie-break, Sanudula (Musaeus College) and Oshini (Wycherly International School) secured the first runner-up and second runner-up places respectively.

 A cash fund of Rs 70,000.00 was offered to the winners with trophies, medals and certificates.
