S. Thomas’ Mount Lavinia bagged the Orville Abeynaike Memorial Trophy
when they beat Royal Colombo 1-0 in their 21st annual hockey encounter at the Astro Turf, Reid Avenue, yesterday.
Both teams were evenly balanced. Thomians drew first blood when striker J.J. David, standing inside the 25 yards circle, got an opportunity to deflect the ball into the net in the 11th minute off a long hit to give them a 1-0 lead at half time.
Royal made several attempts to score in the second half, but the Thomians defended strongly to hold the Royal forwards at bay till the last whistle.
Thomians won the under-16 encounter as well 3-2. R. Shankar, R.L.B. Kiridena and T.A. Hezbullah scored for the winners.
