Ashen Silva outplayed Shamal Dissanayake in a hard-fought contest (6/4, 6/4) to clinch the men’s open title at the 107th National Tennis Championship worked off at SLTA courts during the weekend.
In a tightly contested first set, both Ashen and Shamal were searching for a break in their serves to get an early lead. However, after a brilliant rally Ashen dominated play to win the first set 6/4 and rattle his opponent.
Ashen was put to the test by Shamal in the second set. Shamal used all his experience and fought hard to stay alive in the match, but it was all in vain, as a pumped up Ashen was all over the court to wrap up the set 6-4 and claim the title.
In the women’s open final, Rukshika Wijesuriya created the biggest upset in this year’s championship when she edged defending champion Anjalika Kurera in a thrilling three setter (6/1, 6/7, 6/2) to win the women’s crown.
