Those over 20 to get booster jabs

The first and second booster doses of the Covid-19 vaccine will be administered to those over 20 in a special programme by the Health Ministry to strengthen the vaccination against viral infection.

Director of the Health Promotion Bureau (HPB), Dr. Ranjith Batuwanthudawa said yesterday (15) that children between 12 to 19 years would be administered the first and second doses of the Covid vaccine and adults above 20 years would be given the first and second booster doses on 17 and 24 September 2022 and, 1 and 8 October 2022.

“This would be in addition to the routine coronavirus vaccination services being carried out from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on other days of the week as arranged by the Medical Officers of Health (MoHs) and hospitals (Base Hospitals and above),” he said.

Accelerated school-based vaccination programmes would be organised to complete the vaccination of eligible schoolchildren aged 12 to 19 years by offering doses of the Comirnaty Covid-19 mRNA vaccine. Dr. Batuwanthudawa said MoH’s would offer the vaccine to children who are unable to get it from school.

National statistics show that 82 per cent of the country’s population had taken the Covid vaccine, while 66.49 per cent had taken the second by 29 August 2022. Epidemiology Unit statistics show that 55.32 per cent of the target population had been given the first booster dose of the Covid vaccine and 1.09 per cent the fourth dose (second booster dose) of the vaccine.
