Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) will kick off the inter club rugby season with the sevens tournament, with the intention of picking the national sevens squad. Matches will commence on 30 September at the Race Course Ground in Colombo.

For the first time, the three-day tournament will be an open Invitational Tournament which will feature all top Division 8 Clubs, Provincial Unions, Planters and Old Boys Rugby Teams. A total of 16 Men’s teams and 6 Women’s teams are scheduled to take part.

According to the organisers, the tournament will be an opportunity for all players who were deprived of a sevens tournament for the last two years due to Corona to participate, and tough competition would be advantageous for players to get back on track.

The three-day event will feature a selection of the Men’s and Women’s National Teams to play the Asian Sevens Series 2022 which will take place during October and November 2022 in Thailand, UAE and Kazakhstan.

However, since Asia Rugby has suspended SLR, Sri Lanka cannot participate in any tournament conducted by them, and SLR is working round the clock to get the suspension lifted.

In the meantime, according to SLR Secretary Nizam Jamaldeen, they have spoken to a few sponsors and received positive feedback, and will finalise the tournament sponsors as soon as possible.

All registered clubs and provincial unions who wish to participate will be permitted to enter one team per club. They should contact Gayathri via email [email protected] on or before 16 September.
