19-member youth contingent leave to Bangkok

A 19-member youth contingent (boys and girls) left to Thailand (Fashion Island) to participate at the WTT Youth Contender 2022 to be held from 12 to 18 September. This event is an important segment of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) calendar. The WTT Youth series includes the following age categories: U-11, U-13, U-15, U-17 and U-19.

Players will participate in individual events (singles) in their respective age categories, and were selected according to the current ranking list of each age category after the Junior Nationals.

Because the event is held in the Asian continent, participants from Asian and South Asian countries are high. Apart from last year, Sri Lankan teams have been regulars in Thailand for the youth series and shown promising results.

WTT Youth Contenders aligns with the WTT Series to create a pathway to increase inter-generation competitiveness and give an opportunity for talented and/or fast-improving players to put their skills to the test against slightly older opponents.

The next step up the international ladder, the WTT Youth Star Contenders, is reserved for the cream of the future crop, with performance and World Ranking points earned at the WTT Youth Contender events determining who qualifies.

TTASL helped the youngsters to seek sponsorship from external sources to cover their expenses.(IR)
