SC allows petitioners to name Gotabaya as respondent

The Supreme Court on Friday (9) granted permission to name former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, in his personal capacity, as a respondent in regard to the Fundamental Rights (FR) petitions filed against Trincomalee Oil Tank farm agreement.

The Petitions were filed by Secretary of National Bhikkhu Front Ven. Wakmulle Udhitha Thera, Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thera and Ven. Bengamuwe Nalaka Thera. While the Attorney General was due to appear on behalf of Rajapaksa when the Petition was initially filed, it was observed that Rajapaksa could now be named in his personal capacity as he ceased to hold the post of President.

Thereby, Supreme Court two-Judge Bench, comprising Justices Buwaneka Aluwihare and Shiran Goonaratne granted permission to so amend the caption of the petitions.

Former Minister of Energy Udaya Gammanpila in January stated that Trincomalee Oil Tank Development Complex Project was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers and that the agreement pertaining to this development will be signed with India.
