Exams Dept website hacker granted bail


The Colombo Additional Magistrate, on Friday (9), released on bail a 19-year-old youth who was charged by the CID with hacking the Department of Examinations website and publishing information of candidates, contained in it, on a website created by him.

The suspect was released on a surety bail of one million rupees and as another bail condition, the Magistrate ordered the suspect to report to the nearest Police station in the area he resides on the last Sunday of every month.

The suspect, Asela Indiweera is a resident of Hapugala and is due to sit for the Advanced Level examination next year. The lawyer appearing on his behalf requested his release, taking into consideration the release of a 17-year-old who was arrested and detained on charges of hacking the website of former President Maithripala Sirisena. Accordingly, the Magistrate released Indiweera on bail.

CID had filed charges against this suspect over unauthorised access under the Computer Crime Act, No.24 of 2007 for having obtained information from the official website of the Department of Education without permission and publishing it on another website.
