A New Dimension of Luxury

Kandy is the hill capital of Sri Lanka with a great historical and religious background. Surrounded by tea plantations and mountains from all over the place. From visiting the sacred places to hiking in the mountains to exploring the International Buddhist Museum to watching local performances to visiting the Botanical Gardens, Kandy offers you a wide range of activities that suits the itinerary of everyone. Even the wildlife and exotic flora and fauna are in abundance in this cultural capital of Sri Lanka.

A hotel can easily attract customers through its aesthetics, appearance and atmosphere. Situated in the heart of the City of Kandy, the Grand Kandyan is the perfect heaven to explore Kandyan’s warm hospitality and diverse cultures. Just 10 minutes from Dalada Maligawa; the sacred tooth relic of Buddha and Kandy City Centre shopping mall. As its name suggests, The Grand Kandyan is the epitome of extravagance with a beautiful and scenic atmosphere. The impressive lobby is adorned with chandeliers, marbled floors with golden accents, ornaments, elevated carpeted sitting areas and contemporary red chairs. Boasting stunning views of the Kandy City upon entry, the design is light and airy with a touch of elegance in the intricate floor and rich red and gold furniture.

The hotel features over 100 rooms and three restaurants. They are well known for their specialty cuisine and the weekend buffet. The property also boasts multi-purpose conference halls, which they pride themselves on being fully booked almost every weekend, as the hotel has become a hotspot for events. The hotel’s interior is Thai-inspired and provides a range of attractions, dining options and a rooftop garden area and bar. For recreation, there is a gymnasium, swimming pool, spa and more.

With a distinctive design narrative reflecting a glittering complex of Thai interiors, the design largely resembles royal references. The property is fully adorned in gold or red accents. Expect gold ornaments and ample sitting areas, lavish interiors to full-blown decors with bold colours and rounded furnishings. It’s grandeur through illustration and bold light fixtures with ornament decoration. The high ceilings and warm gold details are an inviting treat for arriving guests.

We picked the deluxe rooms but I kid you not, the deluxe rooms are quite fancy in their own way; complete with either twin or double beds, a luxury bathtub, and a private balcony amongst other little amenities. The rooms are tastefully furnished with interiors that complement the design echoes of the hotel. Bold colours have been used throughout which reflect the hotel’s interior. The rooms are of generous proportions with equally-spacious bathrooms. Boosting magnificent views of the city and Kandyan hills.

The rooftop and restaurants flaunt sweeping views of the lush greenery, the restaurants cook up a feast of local and global culinary favourites with a touch of Sri Lankan hospitality. The restaurant’s offer à la carte, a set menu and a buffet on weekends. The cuisine ranges from local to international fare. Focusing on international and Sri Lankan fresh seasonal produce, where the traditional meets the contemporary West. The Tamarind Restaurant hosts the hotel’s buffet; they serve buffet-style dining on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays for breakfast and dinner.

The Grand Kandyan Hotel Kandy has revamped banquet facilities to meet the present day demands and will also be hosting several foreign MICE events. The General Manager of Grand Kandyan Thusith Samaraweera noted, “We are renowned for international and local conferences and are a preferred choice from Kandy corporates as well as the medical fraternity as the main venue to host their events as the facilities, meals and service we provide for the price we offer is unmatched by our competitors.”

With a minimum seating capacity of 350 to a maximum of 1,000; the Royal Peacock ballroom is a majestic banquet facility with sparkling crystal chandeliers with adjustable lighting system offering an unforgettable ambiance. Golden Eagle is a venue for celebration in Kandy which can host a grand wedding, business meeting or conference while Flamingo ballroom is a versatile space to host an event from birthday parties, weddings to business meetings with maximum seating capacity of 175. The PR and Marketing Manager Grand Kandyan Imesha Munasinghe said that they have launched a special Honeymoon package which is very popular. The Grand Kandyan was awarded with the
‘Best Five-Star Resort Hotel’ at the National Tourism Awards 2018 and has won a host of other local and international awards.

The space and atmosphere rings of serenity, providing a sense of luxury, comfort, solitude and utter relaxation. There’s a great deal to pay attention to in the most subtle way, and yet, the signature touch of family values, historic knowledge and art. As travellers I think we all look to some bits of added comfort and even though the design and architecture of Grand Kandyan lean towards modern luxury, I do appreciate the luxuries and views. I found the staff to be ever so courteous, kind, attentive, and helpful. It is the people that make up a big part of a memorable vacation.
