Lorry topples down 50-foot precipice near Haggala

Nuwara Eliya Police said that a lorry travelling from Nuwara Eliya to Badulla had fallen into a 50-foot precipice in Haggala on 5 September.

According to Police, the lorry driver’s assistant had been injured in the accident and had been admitted to the Nuwara Eliya Hospital on the evening of 5 September.

The accident had taken place near a bend close to the Haggala Gardens on the Nuwara Eliya-Badulla main road.

The lorry has been transporting rice to both wholesale and retail outlets from Polonnaruwa to areas such as Nuwara Eliya, Badulla and Welimada.

Police added that the lorry had crashed into a house but a fortunately no one had been inside at the time of the accident.

The lorry had been badly damaged and inquiries conducted so far by the Police found that a mechanical failure had led to the accident.
