SLAF clinch men’s and women’s titles


Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) bagged the Men’s and Women’s titles at the Munchee Super League Volleyball Championship 2022 worked off at National Youth Services Council Indoor Stadium, Maharagama on Sunday (28).

The all-important ‘Super League Men’s final’ clash saw Air Force dominating from the get go to outplay Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) 3-0 to clinch the men’s title.

Air Force were seen in attacking mode from the outset to grab a 13-10 lead, and staved off a strong challenge from CEB to pull away for a close 27-25 win in the first set.

It was more of the same as the Airmen kept CEB at bay and rolled to a 25-22 triumph to go up 2-0.

Into the deciding third set, it was a shaky start for the Airmen giving away back-to-back points, but held their nerve to win the third set 25-21 and the title.

Air Force playmaker Mahela Indeewara had a tremendous outing and was adjudged the most valuable player. 

Into the women’s match, the Air Force lasses came from behind to upset Sri Lanka Army 3-1 in the women’s final.

SLA won the first set with a commanding 17-25 win, but failed to maintain their momentum and the Air Force lasses bounced back and grabbed the next three sets (25-21, 25-23, 25-20) to win the title.

Anusha Abeysinghe of SLAF was crowned the most valuable player.    

Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe, Chairman of the National Sports Council, Arjuna Ranatunga and Secretary, Ministry of Sports graced the occasion as special guests and presented the awards.
