The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) strongly condemned the recent spate of arrests of those engaged in the ‘Aragalaya’ under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).
SLFP Chairman, former President Maithripala Sirisena said, it will not augur well for Sri Lanka if the Government continues to arrest protesters under the PTA ahead of the upcoming UNHRC sessions in Geneva.
He observed that at a time where there is no war against terrorism in the country, it would not be prudent for the Government to victimise those expressing dissent using the PTA.
Hence, Sirisena urged the Government to seriously consider moves towards abolishing the PTA.
