Sri Lanka defeat Pakistan to finish third

Sri Lanka ended their ongoing Billie Jean King Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Group 2 Tennis Tournament in third place after defeating Pakistan 3-0 on Friday.

The islanders playing for third spot were off to a dominant start with Anjalika Kurera opening the count with a thrilling win over Suhali Ushan (4/6, 6/3, 7/5) in an eye catching three setter.

In the second singles, Rukshika Wijesuriya had things easy with a 6/0, 6/1 win over Mahbob Khan.

Into the doubles, Neyara Weerawansa teamed up with Hasali Gajaba to dominate Khokhar Meheq and Malik Noor in an easy two setter (6/1, 6/2).

Earlier, Sri Lanka lost all hopes of another top spot after they were beaten 2-1 at the hands of Uzbekistan in their third match. 

Eight countries – Brunei Darussalam, Guam, Mongolia, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Sri Lanka – took part in the tournament.

Sri Lanka women’s team comprised Anjalika Kurera (ICBT Campus), Rukshika Wijesuriya (playing college team USA), Janali Manamperi (MAS Kreeda), Neyara Weerawansa (British School Colombo) and Hasali Gajaba (Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo).

The tournament commenced on 22 August and will continue till 28 August.
