Leopard-human conflict emerging

The report compiled by the three-member committee with regard to the death of a leopard in an estate recently, states that similar to the human-elephant conflict that is presently raging in Sri Lanka, a conflict between leopards and humans is emerging.

The report filed by the committee has stressed that due to loss of forest cover for animals to roam in the upcountry areas and the scarcity of meat, leopards have started entering into human settlements.

As a result, leopards get ensnared in traps set for animals roaming in estates.

The committee also added that in order to bring the situation under control, it would be pertinent to educate the residents in estates on the importance of protecting endangered animals and how to handle animals in distress.
