Suspect’s Phone in Police custody but posts still being shared – Counsel


The lawyer appearing on behalf of a suspect, who had been released on bail after being charged with publishing an anti-Government post ‘Parlimenthuwa Watalamu – 225 Pannamu’ (Lay siege to Parliament – Chase away 225 MPs), told Colombo Chief Magistrate Nandana Amerasinghe, that controversial posts are still being  shared through the suspect’s mobile phone, which is in the custody of Police.

This submission was made by lawyer Mohammad Azver, via a motion filed on behalf of his client, identified as Pethum Vimukthi.

Later, the Chief Magistrate stated that he will record the details and put before the Court. The suspect was nabbed by the CID, in connection with the publishing of an anti-Government post via social media platforms, on 30 July and after being produced in Court, he was remanded. He was then subsequently released on bail.
