President’s Trophy K/O kicks off on 27 Aug

The much-awaited knock out rugby tournament among the top 8 school teams in each segment (A, B, C) takes place at the Royal Sports Complex and Havelock Park commencing 27 August. Isipathana and S. Thomas’ are favoured to move forward to the next round in Segment A.

The semi-finals and the grand final will move on to the Royal Sports Complex thereafter in two weeks-time. Unbeaten League champions Isipathana should have things their own way when they meet Dharmaraja in the first quarter-final, which should be one-way traffic.

Vidyartha faced a major blow prior to their quarter-final against the Thomians. Five of their players were found guilty and suspended by the Education Ministry for assaulting Isipathana players after their league match at Nittawela recently. Isipathana won the game narrowly 25-23.

Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) and Education Ministry conducted an inquiry into the incident and the five players – skipper Arosh Ratnayake, S.W. Kodithuwakku, H.M. Thilakaratne, K. Wijerathne and K.S. Premaratne – were found guilty and given a one month ban and will not be able to play in the knock out tournament due to the suspension. This will give the Thomians a good opportunity to move forward to the semi-final.
