UNP Chairman Wajira Abeywardena yesterday (24) denied social media claims that President Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Government were suppressing democratic activities.
Abeywardena added that in the past Sri Lanka had witnessed a great social transformation as a result of people’s struggles, following the threats to the democracy in the country.
He said that the country had lost public property amounting trillions of rupees as a results of insurgencies and protests that erupted in the country from 1970 to 2022. Addressing the media at Sirikotha, Abeywardena said electing Wickremesinghe as the President could be recognised as a victory of democratic norms and values.
