St. Peter’s ‘knocked out’ after inquiry

Following a complaint made against St. Peter’s by Dharmaraja  alleging they had fielded an ineligible player in the Dialog Schools Rugby League games against them in the first round, an inquiry was conducted by Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) regarding the issue.

At the inquiry it was found St. Peter’s was guilty of having fielded a player who had failed his O/L Examination twice, and had sat for the O/L exam again this year (3rd attempt).

This blind side move by responsible officials of the school tarnished the image of St. Peter’s who have a rich rugby history, having won the schools league and knock tournaments on several occasions.

St. Peter’s have now been demoted to the ‘B’ Division from next year.

However, according to reliable sources St. Peter’s are preparing to take the matter to courts, and this may push back the knock out tournament.

Previously, the same punishment was meted out to Isipathana in 1991 and Vidyartha, Kandy in 2012 for a similar offense.

All schools are concerned over the matter, since it may ruin the dream of some of the players who are determined to play the knock out tournament which is being conducted after two years due to Covid.

However, on Tuesday evening SLSRFA had verbally informed all other schools the new knock out schedule after the suspension of St. Peter’s.

This year, St. Peter’s we’re not up to the mark and finished the League in fifth place in the first round and couldn’t find a place in the super round. They also lost their traditional fixture to S. Thomas’ last week.

The quarter-finals will be worked off at two venues – Royal Complex on 27th and Havelock Park on 28th, while the two semi-finals will be held on 3 and 4 September at Royal Complex and the final on the 11th at RC.
