Sri Lanka continue to impress


Sri Lanka continued to impress when they defeated Guam 3-0 in a first-round fixture of the ongoing Billie Jean King Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Group 2 Tennis Tournament in Tajikistan yesterday.

Tennis sensation Anjelika Kurera got the first win of the day for Sri Lanka when she comfortably outplayed Packbier Sydney (6/0, 6/1) in the first singles match.

Following a similar script, Rukshika Wijesuriya stunned Gibson Fremont (6/0, 6/2) in the second singles.

In the doubles, Janali Manamperi teamed up with Rukshika Wijesuriya to get the better of Gibson Fremont and Packbiet Sydney 6/1, 6/0.

The tournament commenced on 22 August and will continue till 28 August.

Eight countries – Brunei Darussalam, Guam, Mongolia, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Sri Lanka – are taking part in this tournament.

Sri Lanka women’s team comprise Anjalika Kurera (ICBT campus), Rukshika Wijesuriya (playing college team USA), Janali Manamperi (MAS Kreeda), Neyara Weerawansa (British School Colombo) and Hasali Gajaba (Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo).
