CB Governor to conduct workshop in Parliament


Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe will visit Parliament on 30 August to conduct a workshop for MPs with regard to the present economic situation of the country. 

The programme will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Furthermore, Leader of the House Susil Premajayantha said by making an amendment to the Standing Orders, they will promptly appoint the Sectoral Oversight Committees.

He also said according to the President’s suggestion, three more Standing Committees are expected to be appointed to strengthen the Parliamentary Committee system.

Meanwhile, President Ranil Wickremesinghe in his capacity of Minister of Finance, Economic Stability, and National Policies will present the inaugural speech of the second reading of the Appropriation (Amendment) Bill on 31 August, Acting Secretary General of Parliament Kushani Rohanadheera said.

This decision was taken at the Committee on Parliamentary Business Meeting chaired by Deputy Speaker Ajith Rajapakse yesterday morning (24).

Accordingly, on 30 August Parliament is scheduled to convene at 1:00 p.m.

The debate on the second reading of the Appropriation (Amendment) Bill will be held from 31 August to 1 and 2 September. 

The vote on the Bill will take place on 2 September after the Committee Stage.

Three regulations under the Foreign Exchange Act, a resolution under the Customs Ordinance, and Orders under the Special Commodity Levy Act are also scheduled to be approved in Parliament on 2 September.

On 29 September, the adjournment debate will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on “The difficulties faced by the public due to increase in the electricity tariff by a large proportion,” following a motion brought by the Opposition.

A discussion was also held regarding the need to give fair time to the MPs who left the Government to act independently during the parliamentary debates.
