PHU calls for PCoI to probe event surrounding Aragalaya

The Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) has called for a Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) to investigate the events surrounding the Aragalaya from 9 May to 12 July.

PHU Leader MP Udaya Gammanpila said the attacks on peaceful protesters on 9 May are more horrific than the events of 1987-89.

“Murder of MP Amarakirthi Athukorala and arson attacks on properties of MPs like Sumanapala Rathnasekara is a mystery to this day. Also, no matter how many accusations are levelled against an MP, no one has right to take the law into their own hands,” he said.

Addressing the media yesterday (22), Gammanpila said regardless of how many ordinary people join the struggle in good faith, Tamil separatists and non-governmental organisations supported by US government used funds to activate this struggle with ulterior motives.

“Although some argue that overthrowing governments through popular uprisings began a decade ago with the Arab Spring, US’ strategy dates back 70 years. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) overthrew Iran’s Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh’s government in this manner in 1953, under the leadership of Kermit Roosevelt. At the time, when those countries became wealthy due to the fuel owned by US and British companies in Iran, the latter had fallen into abject poverty. Prime Minister Mossadegh established those oil companies to exploit his country’s oil resources,” he explained.

However, he said on 25 May, they requested that the former President appoint a PCoI to investigate the violence on both sides and its context.

“However, that did not happen. As a result, we ask the incumbent President to form a PCoI to investigate the violence across the country from 9 May to 12 July,” he said.
