Major blow strikes Sri Lanka ahead of Asia Cup

Ace Sri Lanka pacer Dushmantha Chameera who was named in the 20-member squad has been ruled out of the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 tournament after he picked up a calf strain injury during a practice session on Friday.

The tall and lanky pacer was a vital cog of the team, and his absence will be a major blow to the Sri Lankan outfit.

Chameera is the third big-name pacer to be ruled out of the Asia Cup, as India will be without the services of Jasprit Bumrah, who is nursing a back injury, and Pakistan just lost Shaheen Shah Afridi to a knee injury.

As per SLC sources, the Selectors have brought in Malinga-clone Nuwan Thusara as injury cover.

The squad will be led by regular white ball skipper Dasun Shanaka with Charith Asalanka as his deputy.

Sri Lanka will begin their campaign against Afghanistan on the opening day of the tournament at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai. The tournament was originally scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka, but shifted to the UAE due to political turmoil and the economic crisis in the cricket-crazy island nation.

However, Sri Lanka will continue to act as the host of the tournament.

Matches will be played across two venues – Dubai International Stadium and Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

The 15th edition of the Asia Cup is scheduled to commence on 27 August with the final scheduled to take place on 11 September.
